Whether considering the role of philosophical critique in aesthetics or the professional function of the critic in our contemporary moment, this theme tracks the vital role of writers and thought leaders who engage in deep cultural and theoretical investigations of arts and culture. What is the role of aesthetics in the history of critique?  How has criticism changed in response to different art forms--film, art, literature, dance, theater? How has the role of the journalist and critic changed in a digital age where where "everyone's a critic?" 

Art exhibition asks: Who counts in America?

At a San Francisco arts nonprofit called Root Division hangs a photo that Stephanie Syjuco took in 2017. It’s a portrait — or what appears to be a portrait — of a person covered in a semi-sheer checkered cloth. It’s titled “Total Transparency Filter (Portrait of N).”

Berkeley Journalism lecturer, students and alumni honored in 2021 Pulitzer Prizes

The work of a Berkeley Journalism lecturer, five students and two alumni was honored in the 2021 Pulitzer Prizes, in the Breaking News, National News and Public Service categories, Columbia University announced.

Kim Nalley graduated in May 2021 with a Ph.D. in history. In her dissertation, “G.I. Jazz,” she looks at African Americans as jazz artists, as well as occupiers, in post-World War II Germany.
