SEMO Soil Laboratory, 2018
SEMO is a company that was originally made as both a visual thought-experiment in order to break down the complexity of the current foodscape we exist in and a critique on how we preserve culture in today’s dynamic environment. Our current mission statement is: “We document and protect indigenous data worldwide.” SEMO is a project that questions functionality and the role of a craft object. It also raises issues with current scientific research, raises questions about the current global food system, and brings into conversation the role of technology in a contemporary landscape.
The SEMO Soil Laboratory is the third iteration of the SEMO project. The Soil Laboratory focuses on:
-The collection of soil samples in our SEMO SOIL CORE CONTAINERS.
-The analysis of the soil in physical, chemical, and biological terms.
-The visualization of any micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes) as well as any potential macro-organisms (arthropods and earthworms).
-Genetic testing and analysis of all organisms present.
-Returning information to communities as well as incorporating it into the SEMO database.
