Auditions for 'Men On Boats'

Thu Jan 20, 2022 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Online via Zoom
The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies invites UC Berkeley students to audition for the Spring 2022 production of "Men On Boats" by Jaclyn Backhaus, directed by Domenique Lozano. Details and sign-up forms are available on the TDPS Callboard. Synopsis: Ten explorers. Four boats. One Grand Canyon. "Men On Boats" is the true(ish) history of an 1869 expedition, when a one-armed captain and a crew of foolhardy yet loyal volunteers set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. Time Out New York calls the play "a thrilling, gender-flipped slice of manifest destiny." Casting: We are looking for a cast of 10 actors. From the playwright's casting note in the script: "The characters in 'Men on Boats' were historically cisgender white males. The cast should be made up entirely of people who are not. I’m talking about racially diverse actors who are female-identifying, trans-identifying, genderfluid, and/or gender-nonconforming." Students of all racial, ethnic, and dis/ability identities are invited to audition. All bodies, sizes, neuro-abilities, accents, and dialects are also welcome. Dance students are encouraged to audition. Commitment: Students cast in the show are committing to be available for all indicated calls on the Production Calendar and must enroll in Theater 181 for four units. See the production calendar on the TDPS Callboard. Rehearsals and performances for this production will be held in person. Audition Details: Auditions will be online via Zoom on Thursday, January 20, 2022 from 6pm–10pm PT. Please be prepared to perform a 2-minute contemporary monologue of your choosing, as well as 16 bars of an a capella song. The tone of the song should be along the lines of a folk song, hymn, drinking song, or a little ditty. Callbacks will be held online via Zoom on Friday, January 22, 2022 from 6pm–10pm PT. Please be prepared for movement work as well as reading/scene work. Sign-up to audition on the TDPS Callboard. COVID-19 Masking Advisory: TDPS is planning for performances without face coverings during the Spring semester. We are open to a dialogue with any student actor who would prefer to be masked. Please email Jamila Cobham, Production Manager, if you have any concerns: Accessibility Note: If a disability-related accommodation is needed for an audition, please contact the Undergraduate Academic Advisor at least one week prior to the start of the semester: For students in DSP, please contact your DSP specialist well in advance of the audition so there is time for the accommodation process, and notify the department to make arrangements. Please ask DSP to also send disability accommodation notices for auditions to the Undergraduate Academic Advisor at least one week prior to the start of the semester.
