Newfound Peace: Berkeley Domestic Violence Shelter, 2019.
An individual seeks emergency housing when they are vulnerable and in need of help. Whether this individual has been sex trafficked, labor trafficked, in a domestic violence situation, or wherever they might have found themselves, they are in dire need of somewhere safe to go. Somewhere that they can try to find peace, and rebuild themselves.
It is with this in mind that this project was born. With privacy being the highest concern of residents of emergency housing, I set out to develop a housing solution that placed privacy and sense of home at the forefront.
This design gives its residents apartments that have windows on up to three sides of the unit and a multitude of differing and adjustable amounts of privacy. Along with this, it provides its residents access to comfortable and safe outdoor spaces, therapy & counseling spaces, vocational training spaces, and law services.
