Drill Sergeant
Drill Sergeant, 2016, augmented drill and miter saws, laser distance finders and sensors, laser potentiometers, dimensions variable.
Drill Sergeant is an ecosystem of augmented power tools that opens entry points to hands-on making, helping anyone develop confidence with the often-intimidating world of power tool use. Tools in this ecosystem are outfitted with sensors that provide real-time feedback, including tips on what to try and how to stay safe. Via projection, this feedback appears directly on the surface or part being worked on. This immediate, seamlessly integrated guidance allows one to develop mastery while actively using the tool, tightly connecting learning and making. Current tools in our Drill Sergeant ecosystem include an augmented drill and an augmented miter saw, each of which is designed to maximize precision while giving continuous guidance. Our tools include features that provide live, user-friendly guidance on areas like drill depth and cutting distance. Furthermore, our system allows users to customize an assembly on the fly and supports aided error recovery. Throughout the making process, Drill Sergeant hones and reinforces tangible skills. Grounded in the idea that anyone should be able to express themselves and make their own projects, Drill Sergeant paves the way for a more hands-on, innovative future, empowering a diverse new generation of makers to bring their ideas to life.
