Vessel Head, 2021.
This piece explores the notion of the ceramic head vessel. The process of making Vessel Head was intuitive and exploratory. Considering our remote learning situation, I worked from my kitchen studio which influenced the materials that I used and the experimental execution of the form. The vessel was sculpted from self-hardening clay and the surface was created using successive layers of Elmer’s Glue, turmeric/chili/curry powders, b&w dried pigment, white clay slip, red dirt, sumi ink, coffee grounds, red wine and spray paint. My hope was that the accumulated layers would activate the surface and diffuse the facial features into poetic ambiguity.
