Talking to Gods

Thu Jan 18, 2018 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Hearst Museum of Anthropology
The Ainu, the Indigenous people of northern Japan, traditionally use uniquely carved prayer sticks and highly-prized lacquer bowls to send prayers and offerings to their many gods. These sacred objects have made their way into museum collections, but their stories are seldom straightforward: they are entwined with ongoing Ainu cultural change, the desires of collectors, and the ways in which exhibits have shaped the Ainu in the American imagination. Come learn more of these stories and view artifacts now on display at the Hearst Museum. Speaker: Christopher Lowman is a PhD candidate in UC Berkeley's Department of Anthropology and contributor to the current exhibit People Made These Things: Connecting with the Makers of Our World. Registration is appreciated, but not required. This event is free with museum admission.
