Delve into Couture Korea with textile historian Lee Talbot and costume historian Minjee Kim. Talbot will present on the key fashion trends in 18th-century Korea and Kim will talk about inspiration, appropriation, and innovation in contemporary Korean and global fashion. After these short presentations, the historians will engage in a discussion and answer questions from the audience. Lee Talbot is curator at the George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum, where he specializes in East Asian textile history. Previously, he was curator at the Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum at Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. A Ph.D. candidate at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture in New York City, Talbot is writing his dissertation on textiles and women’s culture in Joseon dynasty Korea. Minjee Kim is an independent historian specializing in Korean dress. She received her doctorate in 2000 from Seoul National University with a dissertation on the sartorial culture of the Balhae dynasty (698–926). She has published numerous papers on the topic and has taught at Jeonju Kijeon College and Seoul National University.
