Whether considering the role of philosophical critique in aesthetics or the professional function of the critic in our contemporary moment, this theme tracks the vital role of writers and thought leaders who engage in deep cultural and theoretical investigations of arts and culture. What is the role of aesthetics in the history of critique?  How has criticism changed in response to different art forms--film, art, literature, dance, theater? How has the role of the journalist and critic changed in a digital age where where "everyone's a critic?"

Kristen Hwang ('21) Wins Student Academy Award for Best Documentary

Kristen Hwang’s thesis documentary, “When They’re Gone,” about humanity’s fragile dependence on nature and the consequences of industrializing honey bees for crop pollination, has won the top honor for student documentary filmmaking in the 48th Student Academy Awards.

 

Last week’s decision by the UC Board of Regents to move ahead with a plan for People’s Park that will include student housing, supportive housing and public open space that commemorates the park’s history marked the latest development in the decades-long history of the park.

 

The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive’s latest exhibition, “New Time: Art and Feminisms in the 21st Century,” explores evolving notions of feminism and gender.

 

Visitors will get a thrill seeing “Enduring Mark: Six Centuries of Drawing From the Gray Collection” at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.
