Students: Star in Stan Lai's new Play "AGO" and Get Credit!

Calling all actors, designers, playwrights and directors of all levels for the chance to prototype a new experimental performance with internationally renowned director, playwright, and Cal alum, Stan Lai ("The best Chinese language playwright and director in the world" - BBC), and earn units (not to mention it’s a great resume builder)!

THEATER 166 is an amazing opportunity to assist in the creation of a play from start to finish. Stan Lai’s play called, “AGO” is a new theatre piece inspired by Buddhist stories from ancient scriptures, and from modern life. What makes this play experimental is Lai’s incorporation of improvisation as a tool to build scenes and create a script and the taking of a collection of both ancient and contemporary Buddhist scriptures and forming them into a coherent whole.

Playwrights - You will assist in research, recording and transcribing daily improv sessions, create a compendium of the in-progress script, developing characters, and all aspects of writing the play.

Directors - You will assist in all aspects of directing and most importantly learn the organic relationship between script and performance. You will also assist as in-class rehearsal managers and performance stage managers.

Designers and Technical Support - You will work directly with actors, directors, and playwrights from the beginning as an integral part of the ensemble, deriving design ideas in the give-and-take of the creative process and learn design skills in visual thinking and principles of composition in two, three, and four dimensions along side internationally renowned designer Sandra Woodall. You will create your own performance design schemes, using images, models, physical maquette, video, and/or augmented and virtual reality as appropriate. An AR/VR rendering of the performance will be guided by Woodall along with outside VR technical support.
