The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) invites current UC Berkeley students to audition for Berkeley Dance Project 2022, an evening-length dance concert featuring new works by TDPS faculty, guest artists, and students. Synopsis: Bay Area dance companies Kinetech Arts (co-directed by Daiane Lopes Da Silva and Weidong Yang) and Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts (co-directed by Sheldon B. Smith and Lisa Wymore) will be drawing from their years of experience working within the intersection of dance and technology. Each team will be creating a new work for the concert, each taking responsibility for one half of the concert. Kinetech Arts will be drawing from their extensive experience making experimental community-based works that bring engineers into the same room as creative makers and dancers. Kinetech Arts will make use of body-based interfaces, cameras, projections, and provocations about the future of our techno-bodies. Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts will be drawing on their ongoing interest in artificial intelligence and improvisation. Their piece will investigate the similarities between machine learning and the creative processes used in making choices within dance improvisation. Some of the methods investigated will include Anna Halprin's 'RSVP Cycle'—paying particular attention to the role of iteration in finding optimal outcomes and how 'coming into being' is never ending and always changing. Casting: The co-directors of Kinetech Arts are looking for inquisitive dance movers who have a range of dance skills, from the highly technical to the experimental and explorative. Cast of 5-8 dancers. The co-directors of Smith/Wymore Disappearing Acts are looking for dancers with some background in improvisation or dancers who are open to all kinds of movement. Cast of 5-8 dancers. Commitment: Students cast in the show are committing to be available for all indicated calls on the production calendar and must enroll in Theater 180.
