Winter is a wonderful time to create botanical art from seasonal subjects. This two-day class will introduce you to the fascinating world of Botanical Art. Catherine Watters will teach you to observe, measure and draw plants in great detail and with botanical accuracy. Students will work with graphite, colored pencil and watercolors. All levels are welcome. A Supply List will be given to you once you register for the class or you can sign up in advance to use materials provided by the instructor during the workshop for a fee of $10. About the instructor: CATHERINE WATTERS was born and raised in Paris, where her love of art began, Catherine Watters is a botanical artist who paints in watercolor on paper and calfskin vellum. She shows her work in several exhibitions each year, most recently at Villa Bardini, Florence, Italy; the Shirley Sherwood Gallery at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England; The Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens Florilegium, Australia; Parc de Bagatelle, Paris, France; Wave Hill Public Gardens, Bronx, NY; The Horticultural Society of New York; Filoli, Woodside, CA; the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden; the Brooklyn Botanic Garden; The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh, PA; and the New York Botanical Garden. Her paintings are included in many private collections including The Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton Collection and several permanent collections - The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation; The Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens Florilegium, Australia; The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England; The Museum of Natural History in Paris; The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Florilegium; The Alcatraz Florilegium and The Filoli Florilegium. Catherine is the co-founder of the Alcatraz Florilegium and the Château de Brécy Florilegium in France. She is the founder of two Florilegia in the San Francisco area at Quarryhill Botanical Garden and The Gardens at Heather Farms. Her illustrations appear in several books in the U.S. and in France: Rare Lilies of California (CNPS), Pruning (Sunset), Western Garden Book (Sunset), The Environmental Legacy of the UC Natural Reserve System (UC Press, Berkeley), Une Histoire des Fleurs (Perrin), Le Langage des Fleurs (Perrin) et Le Florilège du Jardin de Brécy, published in 2018. Catherine's paintings have been featured in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, other magazines include Horticulture, Victoria, Flower, Public Garden, and Hommes et Plantes. Catherine has been teaching at Filoli since 1999 and is a primary instructor and curriculum developer for the Filoli Botanical Art Certificate Program. She also teaches around the U.S. and in France, frequently lectures on the History of Botanical Art and has curated a number of exhibitions. Catherine is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and is a member of the Board of Directors. She is also a member of the Société Française d'Illustration Botanique and The Florilegium Society at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, Australia. Catherine is a member the Board of Directors of the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden and The Red List Project. She received her B.A. from the University of California at Davis where she studied French and Art. She recently received a Certificate of Appreciation and Excellence from the Orinda Garden Club (GCA) and was inducted into the Hall of Fame, DHS Blue & White Foundation in Davis, CA.
