About Design Field Notes: Each informal talk in this pop-up series brings a design practitioner to a Jacobs Hall teaching studio to share ideas, projects, and practices. About this talk: Robert Kett is a curator and anthropologist based in San Francisco. He received his PhD from the University of California, Irvine and is currently the 2017-18 Emerging Curator at the Canadian Centre for Architecture and Curatorial Assistant of Architecture + Design at SFMOMA. Prior to joining SFMOMA, he held positions at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Getty Research Institute's Department of Architecture and Contemporary Art. Robert's projects have examined art/science intersections; experimental and interdisciplinary practice; and architecture and design in Latin America and the United States. His writing has been published in Representations, Design Observer Quarterly, the Getty Research Journal, Curator: The Museum Journal, and elsewhere and he is coauthor of Learning by Doing at the Farm: Craft, Science, and Counterculture in Modern California (Soberscove Press, 2014). His work has been supported by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution, the UC Institute for Research in the Arts, and other institutions. At the Jacobs Institute, Robert will discuss work including SFMOMA's current exhibition, "Designed in California," which explores the shifting landscape of design in California since the digital revolution, and the museum's engagement with the local design ecosystem.
