Renowned comic book author Gene Luen Yang @geneluenyang (American Born Chinese, Airbenders, Boxers and Saints, Dragon Hoops, New Kid) speaks about the origins of his distinctive narrative aesthetic, which allows him to show how characters develop and transform through their narrative experiences.

While comic books have plenty of room for the fantastical and the magnificent, Yang's narratives are deeply personal and realistic. What, though, could be more magnificent than everyday people turning into heroes who inspire others? How does image and text support this powerful message? Join Yang to discover fundamental visualization methods for characters and narratives, from cell to strip to panel.

Gene Yuen Lang's work has been recognized with many awards, including a MacArthur Genius grant, the Eisner Award, the Publishers Weekly Comics Week Best Comic of the Year, the San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of the Year, the Best Book Award from The Chinese American Librarians Association, and Amazon.com Best Graphic Novel/Comic of the Year. In 2018, Yang joined the board of directors of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.
