Presented by BAMPFA

Rabih Alameddine, Author

Lawrence Rinder, Director, BAMPFA

Beirut and Bay Area–based, internationally acclaimed author Rabih Alameddine joins BAMPFA Director and Chief Curator Lawrence Rinder for a conversation on concepts of strangeness in relation to the museum’s exhibition Strange, which Rinder organized. Featuring works from many cultures and time periods that resonate with the spirit of Surrealism, Strange explores the improbable, uncanny, mysterious, and miraculous as sources of artistic inspiration. The Strange exhibition galleries will be open prior to the program, starting at 5 p.m. Alameddine’s most recent novel is the multi award winning The Angel of History. Other books include I, The Divine; Koolaids; The Perv, and the international bestseller The Hakawati. His novel An Unnecessary Woman was a 2014 National Book Award finalist as well as the recipient of other major awards. Alameddine was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2002.

Arts + Design Mondays @ BAMPFA is organized and sponsored by UC Berkeley's Arts + Design Initiative. In-kind support is provided by BAMPFA. The series is co-curated by the UC Berkeley Department of Art Practice; American Indian Graduate Program; Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium; Berkeley Center for New Media; and Graduate School of Journalism, and by the City of Richmond.
