This selection from the Festival of (In)appropriation—an annual showcase for experimental, found-media film and video—features an array of moving-image formats while probing the limits of audiovisual remix. The raw material for the artists’ work ranges from official state and commercial archives to vernacular collections, home movie repositories, and digital databases. By finding and reframing these preexisting materials, the artists generate novel juxtapositions and recombinations, which often produce ideas and meanings that were unintended or unimagined by the original makers. These remarkable works, in other words, are “inappropriate” in the profoundest sense of the term. The Festival of (In)appropriation is curated annually by Jaimie Baron, Lauren S. Berliner, and Greg Cohen. All works are from the festival unless indicated otherwise.
