Artist and Curator: Silvia Gruner in conversation with Tarek Elhaik

Wed Feb 20, 2019 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Dwinelle Annex, Room 126

Join ARC for an artist talk with Silvia Gruner, followed by a conversation with Tarek Elhaik. Silvia Gruner lives and works in Mexico City. She has always worked in diverse media such as film, video, photography, painting, performance and art installations. Her work establishes intimate and personal relationships with art and tradition, recontextualizing them within contemporary artistic dilemas, social and historial contexts, and public spaces. Tarek Elhaik's (Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology, UC Davis) writings have appeared in books and journals, including Framework, Revista de Antropologia Social, and Critical Arts. He has programmed and collaborated on symposia around the legacy of avant-garde cinema, aesthetics, and visual media. Rather than illustrations of fieldwork, these public programs are the outcome of my participant-observation based "curatorial work" and "curatorial designs".

ARC's 2018-19 program is a collaboration between ARC Interim Director Natalia Brizuela (Film & Media and Spanish & Portuguese), Tarek Elhaik (Anthropology, UC Davis), Anneka Lenssen (History of Art), Leigh Raiford (African American Studies), and Poulomi Saha (English), supported by a generous grant from the The University of California Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI). This project was supported in part by the University of California Office of the President MRPI funding MR-15-328710.
