Through Practice, 2016. Animation, 6:00 minutes.
Through Practice is a multimedia performance by Ashley Ferro-Murray which incorporates choreographed dance and video. The choreography and video were designed in tandem from opposite sides of the country over weekly Skype calls. I worked with Ashley to create the video segments, which were then interwoven with her choreography. The video is composed of medical data rapidly cycling through and interspersed with photos and home videos documenting the performers' cancer treatments. I created the video with a processing program, which randomly cycled through data to create animated sequences. The program allowed dancers to manipulate the animation using motion sensors. For the final performance, a prerecorded video generated from the program was played throughout, interrupting physical dance sequences. In this way the animation acted as another performer on the stage.
