Serenity - Designing a Voice UI for Well-Being, 2021.
This concept video demonstrates an example of how technology can be designed for well-being. Serenity is a VUI in the form of a night stand lamp that helps users achieve better sleep hygiene and improves mental and physical wellness by guiding them through a personalized, stress-reducing, night time routine. When the user is not in the same room, Serenity can be accessed through the user’s smartphone. The voice diary feature allows users to reflect on their sleeping habits and identify sources of stress. Prior to going to bed, users can complete a series of mental exercises and guided meditations that help users fall asleep.

As a part of their final project for their class DES INV 25 (User Experience Design) taught by Instructor Jenny Shirey and graduate student Helen Li, the group worked on harnessing technology to help users with their well-being (physical, mental, or spiritual) by using the full capabilities of a voice user interface. Through this project, the group tried to demonstrate a connection between research and meaningful user experience that is useful, usable, desirable, and ethical.
