Interconnection, 2021.

‘Interconnection’ is a residential project containing 18 intersecting dwelling units organized into an aggregation of 3 standard 50’ x 150’ lots located at a corner of an intersection in Los Angeles. This project explores the idea of interconnection using intersecting masses to minimize boundary while still indicating transition. At intersecting or shared space, this is a form of co-living that is purposely designed to not be frictionless by creating a slight inconvenience: going down a few steps of stairs before going up again. This inefficiency indicates transition, differentiate boundary of dwelling unit space, but still maintain access to the co-living space. As a result, this is a form of softening the barrier. On the exterior, the result of these intersecting unit creates horizontal and vertical compression and expansion of space to also maintain the interconnection while still indicating transition. Therefore, instead of having full physical barrier or none at all, this project focuses on the idea of softening the barrier as transition to maintain privacy while still preserving interconnection between spaces.

Patricia is a senior Architecture student with double minor in City and Regional Planning and Sustainable Design. Growing up in the metropolitan capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta, her experience drives her motivation to use architecture to address issues relating to climate change and urbanism. Her interest lies in using high-performance design to create intersections between architecture and building technology to improve sustainability and equity in the built environment field, especially in the scope of sustainable, low-cost housings.
