  • Design of a black bus pole gripper with a handle and two semicircle grippers.
Share +

Bus Pole Gripper, 2021.

Our group aimed to design an everyday-use product that would safely decrease the spread of COVID19 on surfaces. We wanted to create something that was simple, easy to store and clean, and that would be able to grip poles with a radius of 1.5 inches or smaller. Our prototype has a handle and two semicircle grippers. First, the user should hold onto the handle and rotate the part so it is horizontal. Next, the user should approach the pole and press the flat surface between both prongs against it; the pole should be between between both semicircle cross sections. Finally, the user should rotate the part back vertically so the two semicircles partially wrap around the pole. This gripper is mainly for using on public transport but can also be used for door handles and any other public handle of radius 1.5 inches or smaller.

Constance is a second year Mechanical Engineering Major interested in aerospace and design. She is currently the design team lead of the Engineers Without Borders Nicaragua Sanitation team, and is working at the Space Sciences Lab on a high altitude Balloon.

Luis is a third year mechanical engineering student interested in entering the aerospace industry. He’s currently a part of the Space Technologies At Cal club on campus and is hoping to join SpaceX after graduating to further explore his interest in Aerospace.

Isak is a first year Mechanical engineering major with a minor in ECCS. He is involved in the Berkeley Formula Racing Club and hopes to works in vehicle design optimization at Tesla or Boeing in the future.

Steven is a third year student studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Aerospace at UC Berkeley. Steven also takes on a big role with the initial implementation and rendering of rotors for, where he used finite element analysis software to optimize the design and brought the sketch to life using SolidWorks.
