FULL: “Our Global Biodiversity Predicament and What We Can Do About It in California”

The Garden is honored to host internationally renowned botanist, Dr. Peter Raven. Dr. Raven will talk about the role of plant conservation in California and how that intersects with global plans to address biodiversity loss issues. Dr. Peter Raven is president emeritus of the Missouri Botanical Garden, where he facilitated the establishment of floristic studies and botanical training all over the world. He is an ardent supporter of the national Center for Plant Conservation, of which the UCBG is a participating institution, and of which he was board chair when he oversaw its move to its current institutional home at San Diego Zoo Global. Dr. Raven has received many prestigious awards and accolades during his long career in botany and the conservation of biodiversity, the most recent being the Hubbard Medal of the National Geographic Society in 2018. It is awarded for for distinction in exploration, discovery, and research. Time magazine named him a Hero for the Planet. He received his BS at UC Berkeley and his PhD at UCLA. Free. Donations to the UCBG plant conservation program are welcomed. Light refreshments at 5:30pm, Talk begins promptly at 6pm.
