Join the Jacobs Institute in welcoming Andy Hertzfeld to our Design Pioneers speaker series, where industry leaders across design and technology share stories and insights from their work that has innovated and shaped the way we live. Andy Hertzfeld purchased an Apple II in 1978, which quickly took over his life, inexorably leading him to start working at Apple Computer in 1979. He joined the nascent Macintosh team in 1981 and became one of the primary authors of the original Macintosh system software, including the User Interface Toolbox and many of the original desk accessories. Hertzfeld left Apple in 1984 and went on to co-found three companies: Radius (1986), General Magic (1990) and Eazel (1999). In 2003 he developed Folklore, a web-based system for collective storytelling, where he wrote anecdotes about the development of the Mac. These were later collected in the book 'Revolution in the Valley', published in 2004. In 2005 Hertzfeld joined the team at Google, working with them until his retirement in 2013.
