THE CRUMPLE AND THE SCRAPE: TWO GENDERQUEER TEXTURES Most of us recognize the role that colour plays in gender and its manifestation in design -- witness the persistence of pink and blue children's rooms -- but what about texture? In this lecture, poet and scholar Lucas Crawford argues that texture -- a word that implies touch, movement, and encounter -- can help us better understand how the matter of architecture reproduces gender. Attendees will be exposed to a variety of queer textures from varied genres and sources, notably from theorist Jeanne Vaccaro and architects Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry. ABOUT DR. LUCAS CRAWFORD Lucas Crawford, Associate Professor of English at the University of New Brunswick and the 2019 Recipient of the Arcus/Places Prize, writes poetry and scholarship about transgender, space, food, fat, disability, and more. Among Lucas' books is The High Line Scavenger Hunt, a poetry book about New York's High Line park, and Transgender Architectonics: the Shape of Change in Modernist Space. Lucas grew up in rural Nova Scotia.
