Former Hearst Museum Director Mari Lyn Salvador passes away

Mari Lyn Salvador, a distinguished scholar of brightly colored Panamanian textiles called molas and the director of the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley from 2010-15, passed away on Monday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

So what’s the corpse flower at UC Botanical Garden smell like anyway? “Well, I’d say it smells like dirty gym socks wrapped around a rotten steak,” said Jonathan Goodrich, an associate director at the garden. “Yeah, I’d say that’s pretty descriptive.”

Martin Wong, mostly spurned in life, gets major UC Berkeley museum retrospective

Artist Martin Wong painted so many themes, he can be tough to pin down. He was also a poet, and his art often deals with language and text-as-image. He was a loner who used his time to produce canvases obsessively patterned with thousands of carefully rendered bricks, in painting after painting.

EL CERRITO – Kevin Proctor wanted to be an artist growing up, but abandoned the idea because he couldn’t see his way to a career doing what he loved.

Now, though, after pursuing a career in landscape architecture, he’s feeding his art mojo designing posters and painting murals on the side.

Against the slick, white, barren surfaces of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, or BAMPFA, the red bricks, earthy tones and stained tactile facades of Martin Wong’s paintings bleed together like beautiful and deliberate stains on the wall.
