"Authority" - The 2017 Open Call Student Exhibition

Thu Sep 14, 2017 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Kroeber Hall
The premiere showcase for student art on campus, The Annual Open-Call Student Exhibition celebrates the challenging and diverse art practices of the UC Berkeley community. All Cal students were invited to submit proposals to a competitive Call for Work. This year’s selected artworks, presented in a dazzling variety of media, were created by and for our student artists, outside the context of the classroom. The work in "Authority - The 2017 Open-Call Student Exhibition" provokes a critical conversation about the concept of authority, defined expansively. Art galleries are public forums for open-ended discussions about cultural and social issues - the best work often takes an interrogative form. Thus, artists are ideally positioned to question authority. In light of repercussions of the recent presidential election at local, national, and international levels, our students have a vested interest in confronting the problems of authority. The work in this exhibition is a reflection of their communities, the concerns of their generation, and their vision for the future. Please join us for an Opening Reception on Wednesday, September 13th, from 4 - 7pm.
