Currently based in Seattle, Washington, he has throughout his career been closely affiliated with the Brazilian master Hermeto Pascoal. He was an integral part of Pascoal’s group from 1977 to1992, where he fine-tuned his artistry, performing around the world and co-producing several legendary records. Jovino’s personal style is a creative blend of energetic grooves, deep harmonies, telepathic improvisation, lyrical melodies and great ensemble playing, always inspired and informed by the colorful richness of Brazilian music. His compositions include samba, choro, baião, xote, forró, marcha and many more styles, rooted in centuries-old musical tradition while pointing to new and adventurous harmonic languages. The musicians joining Jovino for this performance are among the best in the West Coast. They have performed together several times to ecstatic responses from their audiences. Jovino says: “It will be a great pleasure to share my music with the public and the beautiful redwood trees in the sequoia grove at the UC Botanical Garden. My music is totally inspired by nature, so this will be a perfect match.” Gyan Riley + Duo Probosci “Beautiful and enigmatic”…”an alluringly intimate vibe created from the first note.” —The New York Times “Gyan Riley is a one-man American-music machine, amicably ranging across the fields of jazz, world music, and post-minimalism.” —The New Yorker Duo Probosci is a collaboration between guitarist Gyan Riley and violinist Timba Harris. Both composers, whose work is featured in John Zorn’s Tzadik Records Composers’ Series, contribute to the interplay between composition and improvisation, steeped with intricacy, subtlety, and shape-shifting energy. They adventurously explore the sonic landscape, from purely acoustic music to unfamiliar electroacoustic textures. Gyan Riley’s diverse work focuses on his own compositions, improvisation, and contemporary classical repertoire. He has performed with an illustrious list, from the likes of Lou Reed, to the Kronos Quartet, to the San Francisco Symphony. Gyan resides in New York City and frequently performs with his father, composer/pianist/vocalist Terry Riley. Terry and Gyan recently scored a new film, The Red Violin, which was selected for Best Foreign Language Film category at the 2018 Oscars. Gyan has four solo CD titles and many ensemble/collaborative recordings. (No surcharge!) Redwood Grove Gate opens at 5pm. Ticket includes admission to the main Botanical Garden collections before it closes at 5:00pm. (a $12/adult value!) Parking in the attached UC campus parking lot ($1/hr) is limited and not guaranteed – carpooling is highly encouraged. All tickets are by registration “will call" list.
