Based in Oakland and dedicated to preserving Afro-Peruvian traditions from the coastal region of Peru, the group will perform Son de los Diablos, a street masquerade that originated in colonial Lima with parades through Afro-Peruvian neighborhoods during carnival time. Dancers will wear masks made in Peru by Grupo Cultural Yuyachkani, and locally by Edmund Badeaux (Chaskinakuy Andean music group). This performance will occur in the courtyard of the Hearst Museum of Anthropology. This timely exhibit cultivates critical thinking about crucial issues such as stereotyping, representation and misrepresentation, and snap judgments.
