Works by Debussy 9:30-11 125 Morrison Hall 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the French composer Claude Debussy’s death. Hear a mini-marathon of Debussy’s piano works by students of the music department. UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra 11-12:30 Hertz Hall, concert stage Established in 1923, the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra is the oldest performing arts ensemble in the University of California system. Join us on Cal Day for a performance of Chausson’s Poème, Glazunov’s Concerto for Saxophone, and Mozart’s First Flute Concerto in G Major. Featuring Zemei Zeng on violin, Alan Huang on saxophone, and Hallie Jo Gist on flute. David Milnes, music director. Berkeley Nu Jazz Collective 11:30-12, 125 Morrison Hall Students from the Berkeley Nu Jazz Collective, directed by Myra Melford, play a set. Carillon Recitals 12-4 Campanile (Sather Tower) Hear 10-minute carillon recitals each hour, on the hour, beginning at noon. University carillonist Jeff Davis and Cal staff and students perform solo works, carillon duets, and Cal songs. The Campanile Esplanade and the Faculty Glade are good places to listen. Javanese Gamelan Ensemble 12:15-1:15 255 Morrison Hall Students in the Javanese Gamelan Ensemble, directed by Midiyanto and Ben Brinner, hold an open rehearsal for an upcoming concert on beautiful antique instruments. The Music Connection: Instrument Petting Zoo 12:30-2:30 128 Morrison Hall The Music Connection is an on-campus group that provides free music tutoring to children in the surrounding Berkeley community. Drop by to play your favorite instrument, introduce yourself or your children to a new instrument, or simply learn more about music at Berkeley! African Drumming and Dance 12:45-1:15 Hertz Hall, south patio Students from C.K. Ladzekpo’s African Music Ensemble perform traditional African music and dance. Celli@Berkeley 1:30-2:15 Hertz Hall breezeway Celli@Berkeley is an all-cello ensemble that aims to explore the possibilities of the cello. Four members will perform cello quartet arrangements of pop-songs, movie scores, classical pieces, and more! Vocal Student Recital 1:30-2:15 Hertz Hall, concert stage Students of the music department’s 150B vocal performance studies gives a short recital. University Gospel Chorus 2:30-3 Hertz Hall, south patio The University Gospel Chorus directed by Mark Wilson performs gospel standards. Chamber Music 2:30-4 125 Morrison Hall Chamber groups coached by Leighton Fong perform works by various composers. University Baroque Ensemble 3:15-4 Hertz Hall, concert stage The University Baroque Ensemble directed by Christine Brandes performs works by various Baroque composers on period instruments.
