Hello Arts + Design community, and welcome to the 2017/18 school year! We are still feeling the excitement from the creative events that helped to celebrate the beginning of the school year.
Here’s a snapshot of the last week, in case you missed it.
Our fall semester began with a takeover of the UC Berkeley official Snapchat account (follow them at ucberkeley). On August 7-11, the Arts + Design team gave a tour of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Literature, Film and Media, and Design. More than 6,000 of you watched as we gave you a tour behind the scenes at the incredible spaces and programs on campus, such as a tour of Jacobs Institute of Design Innovation’s Maker Labs, the College of Environmental Design’s galleries, and even a tour of the KALX radio station! During Golden Bears Orientation, Associate Vice Chancellor of the Arts + Design, Shannon Jackson, led a tour of seventy-two incoming students across our creative campus. Beginning at Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, and ending at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, students were engaged and eager the whole ninety minutes through. Along the way we stopped at Department of Music, College of Environmental Design, Worth Ryder Gallery, Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, Cal Performances, Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, Arts Research Center, CITRIS Tech Museum, and many more! If you’re interested in taking this tour on your own this year, pick up an Arts + Design map when you stop by the Dwinelle Annex on campus.
Immediately following our tour, we enjoyed meeting hundreds of students and community members at Caltopia 2017! The newly formed “Arts District” at Caltopia included campus programs like the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Cal Performances, Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, Arts Research Center, Department of Music, Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, and Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. One fun highlight in particular: “Five Minute Portraits” student artists drew more than 600 portraits of Caltopia participants! Did you get one? With all of this energy and excitement, we are more than ready to dive into Fall 2017.
