Interactive LED Display, 2019.
This custom-built LED display allows users to intuitively interact with a series of animations. It includes 2400 programable LEDs arranged in a 60 x 40 array on a laser engraved sheet of acrylic which is offset from a semi-transparent sheet of matte acrylic which diffuses the emitted light from said LEDs. It is powered by four 5V 60A power supplies and cooled by 4 exhaust fans, all enclosed in a bespoke cherry wood frame. User images are created from the depth sensor data read by the Microsoft Kinect and then superimposed into animations. The user’s color and the background animations react to live sounds from the user's environment. The Kinect is mounted on a 3D-printed stand which houses a servo that pans the Kinect to keep users centered in the frame. The design allows for any user to, either actively or passively, contribute to the images projected onto the LED array in whichever manner they are most comfortable.
