Matthew Gordon Lasner, Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning at Hunter College, CUNY. “Eichler Homes and the Reinvention of Affordable Housings in the Bay Area.” Long before Oscar Newman's Defensible Space and the demolition of Pruitt-Igoe, builders of low-cost housing in the Bay Area embraced alternatives to the tower-in-the-park. One of the leading figures in this effort, beginning in the 1950s, was Eichler Homes. This talk explores Eichler's nearly two dozen experiments in multifamily housing and suggests how the firm's efforts complicate our understandings of how innovation in housing happens. The Library attempts to offer programs in accessible, barrier-free settings. If you think you may require disability-related accommodations, please contact the event sponsor, (designarchives@berkeley.edu), ideally at least two weeks prior to the event.
